January 1st, 1943- March 18th, 2024
William “Starch” Bacon, 81, passed away on March 18, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born on January 1, 1943 in New Haven, Connecticut to Margaret Hoyt Bacon and William Thompson Bacon, Jr. He attended the Bell School, Phillips Academy, Fountain Valley School and The University of Colorado, Boulder.
After graduating from CU Starch settled in Denver where he continued to reside for 48 years. Starch adored tinkering around the house. The beloved project list was never short. He was always looking for creative solutions for everyday problems. This ultimately led him to establishing Bacon Distributing, where he enjoyed helping clients create design solutions for unworkable spaces.
Starch was an excellent athlete becoming the captain of the hockey team and the ski team at Fountain Valley simultaneously. He was always ready for adventures including running rivers at every opportunity, earning a pilot’s license, rock climbing, and joining his cousin Carter Bacon Jr on his schooner in South America. He enjoyed spending time at the family home in Vail, skiing in the winter, fishing and playing golf in the summer. Summers throughout his life were spent in the north woods at Camp Wipigaki and Minaki waterskiing, sailing, playing tennis, canoeing, and simply messing about in boats. As activities receded, he found contentment on the screen porch, simply reflecting or listening to the call of the loons.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Christopher Bacon. He is survived by his sister Catherine von Stroh (husband, Rolland), brother Hoyt Bacon (partner, Vern), brother Jonathon Knight Bacon (wife Debra), former wife Diane Kennedy and former wife Kaye Christianson Bacon; children William IV (wife, Laura Lee), Whitney (wife, Tanja), Dudley Bacon Williams (husband, Walker) and Daniel (wife Dana) and seven grandchildren: Taylor, Eliyah, Kadin, Mikai, Dag, Stein, and Hoyt.
Memorial services will be held on May 4, 2024, at 11:00am at the Vail Chapel with a reception to follow at the Colorado Ski Museum. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of William T. Bacon III can be made to Northwoods Land Trust.
May his afterlife be filled with endless projects and perfectly tightened bolts. His spirit will forever be with us.
